I put my red t-shirt in the bag with some dirty clothes to bring home from a trip. It must have had a little damp spot on it because it bled onto my beige shorts. I'm glad I did not throw it in the wash with the colored clothes. The white on my husbands plaid shirts may have come out pink.
Instead of putting it in the washing machine, I washed it by hand. I'll be doing this until it no longer bleeds.

All you need to do with new clothes to keep them from bleeding is put them in the washing machine by themselves on the lowest water setting and then add 1/2 cup of salt. It locks the color in and you never have to worry about it bleeding again. This also keeps the color from fading which can happen with repeated hand washing to remove the bleeding color.
Thank you. I'll have to try that.
Since my husband and I both wear red quite a bit, I wash everything red or orange or maroon together. After a while, the red won't run anymore and if necessary, I'll throw an old red item in with regular perma-pressed things that are washed on cold.
I once washed a white tablecloth in with a red one, and wound up with a pearly-pink tablecloth. I liked it, but after a few years, it had gone back to white again.
