I rent an apartment with a GE top load washer. Lately it will not spin with a load of clothes in the washer. When I take the clothes out and test the machine still no spinning. But if I let it sit overnight then it will spin with an empty drum.
Sounds like maybe your belt stretched out or just bad or it could be a baring in the drum
Let's face it, a washer that won't spin the water out is of no value. It could be that the washer is out of balance or a number of other things. Let your landlord know that the machine is not working properly. It is his responsibility.
Since you are renting it is definitely the responsibility of the landlord to either have the machine repaired or replaced.
You should notify them as soon as possible as it will probably take them a few days to check it out and decide what to do. If it is a large complex, they probably have maintenance people who do this sort of thing all the time.
In any case, be sure you ask for a date the machine will be fixed and follow up with calls if the work is not done on time.

Our GE washer will not spin when it has a load of clothes. It washes, rinses, and drains but will not spin. However, if you run it empty all cycles work fine. Any ideas?
I had a wonderful repairman in my community. My idea is to call a repair shop and talk to someone there. If you have access to a good repair person, it will likely be an easy thing to fix for someone who knows what they are doing.
I have the same issue. I think this has something to do with the water level sensor. when the washer is dry, the senor works, when you start a cycle, the machine is wet, then the sensor malfunction. In the normal state, the drain and spin is a two steps process. First Drain and then stop for a while and then both drain and spin kicks in. When the water level sensor is malfunction, the drain process never finished, so it would go to the next step, which is spin.
Its most likely the clutch. On a empty load it will spin but with a load of cloths the clutch slips and because of the weight.
