Washing Machine Making a Loud Noise?

Silver Post Medal for All Time! 254 Posts

My washing machine started making a loud noise when it spins. It is a Whirlpool top-loading washer, model number WTW4816FW2. It is a loud rubbing sound. Does anyone know how to fix this?

When a Whirlpool washing machine makes a loud noise when it spins, check the drive pulley first. Check the belt that wraps around the drive motor and pulley to spin the washer tub. Inspect it for damage, accumulated dirt, and general wear and tear. A damaged belt is a common culprit in such cases. If the drive pulley belt is defective, replace it as this could fix the problem.

A loud thumping noise when a washer spins out, usually means the load is unbalanced. To fix that, turn off washer and readjust the load. Turn washer back on to it's spin cycle. If that doesn't fix it, the next step is to unplug machine and take off access panel. Look for broken belt or missing rollers around the tub that it rides against when running. Replace parts as needed, depending on what the problem turns out to be that is the cause of the thumping.

Good luck.

Try putting a shim under the machine and use a level to make sure the machine is leveled. When mine did what you are describing, I found by using a level my machine was off balance. As soon as I got the wood shim to level it out, the problem was solved. Hope your fix is as easy as mine was!

Thanks for everyone's help! It happened to be a plastic shield that went around the drive pulley. We took it off and it solved the problem. The belt seemed to be pushing down on the cage and rubbing through it.

This may have been because of a heavy load or possibly because it is not level. I am going to check if it is level and add a shim if needed as Pghgirl40 suggested.

It could be that something foreign like a coin got stuck in the filter.

Unless this happens often, it could also be the load of wash, if uneven, too heavy. If this is a regular occurrence there are a few issues it could be- 1.- Drive Pulley damage 2.- Tub Bearing Defect 3.-Motor Coupling failure 4.- Clutch Assembly worn out - www.ifixit.com/.../

I guess the first question would be: Do you intend to do repairs/fixes yourself and if so, do you normally take things apart and repair them when necessary? I know that I do not generally try things like that but I have a son that is very good at doing 'fixes' for me.

I'm only asking because most any suggestion will be dealing with moving the machine out from the wall and then taking the panels off to check for broken/loose belts/springs and replacing them with a new part.
Most of the time it also requires a good cleaning.

There are some YouTube videos that might help.
Usually this type of noise means you have a broken/weak drive belt and this can be different on machines.

This link has some very good suggestions from techs so you might want to read several links before you start your fix.
