Washing Machine Timer Not Working?

I have a top loading older Maytag washing machine. When I pull out the timer button to start the washer, it will fill up and will then sometimes stop running. I have to manually pull out on the button a little bit and hold it to keep the machine running. The timer button isn't staying out like it should. Any ideas? If I replace the timer button, do you think that would solve the problem?

You will have to look in your manual. If its an older model, there may be a timer belt.
