My mum has washed my daughter's 100% silk, handmade christening outfit. It now looks like a screwed up crisp bag! Can it be saved?

If she didn't put it through the tumble dryer there is a chance it can be saved - take it to a dry cleaner adverting they specialise in silk wedding and other occasion garments. Other businesses to look for would be ones adverting they specialise in restoring damaged textiles. You might try a historic costume company to see if they can recommend someone they've had good experiences with.
It should be able to be cleaned and then pressed back to shape for the next Baby, but it really does take a professional with training to do it. And again, only if she hasn't made the mistake of putting it into the tumble dryer.
