You might be surprised at how much money you may save using these tips.
- Check the newspapers and fliers that come in the mail and make a list of meals for the coming week with items on sale. Use ingredients at home so you don't need to buy duplicates.
- Stores are laid out to get you to spend the most money. Bakeries are situated for you to see and smell the delicious scents! Baked goods are very often expensive. Make your own and you will save.The deli also will put out samples of meat and cheese, hoping you will try the sample and buy them, often more expensive that in the packages of meat and cheese.
- Set a limit on how much you are willing to spend on extras. You may find a real bargin in the store
- Shop at night and if possible by yourself. If you leave the kids and husband at home and you will save on extras.
- You will be less tempted to buy things that are not on your list if you Eat before you go.
- Buy in bulk only if you can save money. Don't buy giant boxes if it will not be eaten and it goes bad before you can eat it all.
- Check the unit price. The price might be the same, but with less in the package, it actually costs more per serving.
- Buy plain foods such as rice or pasta and add your own seasonings. Buy plain cereal and add your own sugar or honey. You save that way.
- Buy cheaper cuts of meat and use your slow cooker to make a meal. It will be very tender that way, saving money. Also, have several meatless meals.
- Get creative, look on line for cheap meals. Add rice, pasta, vegetables to a can of soup and get a hearty meal.

Spices can vary widely in price. Our drugstore chain, CVS, used to sell large containers for $1. Compare this to a small bottle at Safeway for $4.
