Other terrific ways to prevent varicose veins? Keep your weight down. Invest in good shoes. Walk regularly (to keep the blood flowing in all those veins). Minimize salt intake as well as fatty foods (which clog blood vessels). Consider natural blood thinners (such as cayenne pepper or capsules).
My grandmother was at least 80 lbs overweight for most of her adult life, lifted / carried heavy items as well (on the farm, daily) and ended up having to have those veins stripped. Her sister watched her weight and believed in homeopathic options (cayenne as a blood thinner, for example) and had a few darker veins on her legs but never needed surgery.
