What Are Your Experiences Selling Avon?

I have considered selling Avon, because I love their stuff. I would like to hear any experiences, or feedback, if anyone wishes to share them.

Thank you!

You need a lot of people to sell to. Successful people I know worked in large offices, and had a lot of contacts. You also have to pay for samples. Most people don't make that much money.

Avon selling has changed completely over the past 15 years and it is no longer a door to door or a true Avon party thing either.

  • It is just as Judy stated; lots of contacts are necessary to make very much and then it is real hit and miss thing.

  • I have a friend who sells Avon and I called her since I was not familiar with potential present sales. My comments on this subject are from this conversation.
  • She has been selling Avon for 16 years and she has several "agents" that she has recruited and she does make a small commission from their sales - if they make any sales.
  • She did not tell me how much she makes but she did say that she makes considerably less than she did several years ago.
  • She has a full time job in a very large building but there are 6 other Avon salespeople working that building also.
  • Many of the offices/businesses have stopped letting anyone leave materials as they said employees abused that privilege by reviewing, talking and personal cell phone calls, during their scheduled work hours.

  • She says that samples and materials (nothing is free) are getting more and more expensive and some places throw the sale booklets in the trash.
  • It seems that you need a lot of different places to leave your sale booklets - your church (?), small cafes that you frequent, offices that have several female employees, feed stores (?), nurseries (children's and plant's), and many more.
  • It seems that most beauty shops will not let you leave them anymore because so many now sell beauty products that they make money on.
  • Oh, I almost forgot, if you do not collect your money when products are ordered, you may not really have a sale as there are some who will not pick up their items.
  • These comments are from just one Avon sales rep so maybe others will comment on the success of other people or themselves.

I have been following MLM's for many years and most are dicey propositions at best. Demanding that you buy inventory that would cut into whatever income you might make, and most of the products saturate the market pretty immediately, thus removing your customer base, plus the whole system depends on acquiring downlines IE competitors

Avon is different because it is actually a long-standing, established brand and people DO like their products. If you're new to a territory, you can actually do pretty OK, especially if you yourself like/use the products

apparently Avon has not been doing well in America recently though fortune.com/.../

I had also bookmarked a harrowing story about a new Avon rep to an area who was literally stalked and assaulted by the Avon rep who claimed that territory, but now can't find the link, sadly

I just ran into a woman who has been selling Avon for 52 years. She and I were reminiscing about when she would park at the top of my street and walk down one side, and back up the other with a stop at every house to drop off purchases or pick up up new orders. She knew everyone and everything about them. She loves it, but said it has changed so much and become so competitive and expensive that she may finally throw in the towel and retire.

I felt bad after our conversation. She said people can buy too many ways and at too many price points that it is crazy. Gone is the fun part of person to person, door to door house sales that she enjoyed. She said the younger, computer savvy folks do better than the old timers, but burn out quickly if the money doesn't come fast enough.
