What Breed Is My Dog?

What Breed Is My Dog? - black and white dog on a leashWe rescued our dog and we were told he was 2 years old, but he acts and looks like a puppy. The vet says he is a Border Collie x Lab, but we think Border Collie x Pit Bull mix. Any thoughts?

I do not see pit bull in him at all. I agree with what the vet told you about being a Border Collie mix. I know dogs like this at 2 years old still act like puppies and have a lot of energy. I know my dog did until he was almost 3. The vet has a good idea of the age and they look at the teeth of the dog. I would say he may be a little youner than 2 but he is right around this age. Most dogs do not get out of the puppy stage until they are 18 to 28 months old. I know mine didn't.

Aww!!! How sweet!! Vets are usually very good about breed guesses and I think yours is right. If anything, there is a touch of hound (beagle maybe) in your sweet boy.

I have been an auntie to a number of border collies over the past 20 some years and they are very active and puppy-like for most of their lives, so that could explain the energy level.

They are working dogs and love tasks and rewards for completing them. Even the mixes often the border collie personality takes dominance.

They are very smart and highly trainable for things like services (pick up things, fetch things, as well as doing things like agility training and even being amazing services animals--like the kind that visit people in nursing homes and hospitals.)

Wishing you and your sweet boy lots of fun adventures!

I can see why you think this pup has some pit bull. I see some but not a great deal. Perhaps 25% or less. I also see the border collie and lab in him.

It's hard to tell just by looking at him. After all, he could be the product of multiple mixes down the line! The advice from the border collie 'auntie' makes sense to me. Keep in mind that regardless of the breed, every dog is unique. Sounds like he needs lots of exercise and stimulation, especially if he has border collie in him.

We've rescued ten large and giant breed dogs over the years and the key to their successful adaptation was lots of exercise with us...we explored everywhere with them. The bonding is invaluable.

She looks exactly like our dog that the Vet told us was Lab/Border Collie mix. I don't see pit in yours either. Our dog is much older.

Hi,

I can see the border collie features in your beautiful pup. I don't see that the size of the knees indicates pit bull. I would guess that he is part border collie, and part catahoula, and part hound! I love your pup! He is gorgeous!
