What Breed Is My Dog?

He is about a year old, and he is very smart, but will only do tricks if you're offering a treat. His ears are like a cat's, they move into different positions depending on his mood. His tail is all black with a white tip, and he has lots of extra puppy skin.

Do an online image search using the following search terms:

boxer-shar pei puppies
american staffordshire terrier-shar pei puppies

The photo you've posted doesn't show enough of the dog for me to tell for sure which cross you have, but your dog has Boxer or Staffie feet, a Staffie muzzle with a Shar head, a Shar shoulder area...

My cousin raised Staffies in the US, I raised AKC Boxers and we both did breed rescue - your dog does look like the Shar Pei crosses with Staffie and Boxers we saw on a surprisingly frequent basis, but again, it's hard to tell from the photo you've posted.

If your image searches confirm my thinking, check with your vet for a final confirmation (he/she will usually be able to tell just by looking), then be sure you know the local laws in your area to ensure your particular cross hasn't got several laws surrounding the keeping of.

For example, many areas both back in the US and here in the UK where I now live have 'Dangerous Dog' laws, outright bans on some breeds and cross dogs, and laws regarding leads and muzzles in public or around the vulnerable (children, 'challenged', elderly), fencing, insurance, more.

Too, Shar Pei crosses have some health and behaviour characteristics issues you and the vet need to keep an eye out for - just for starters, Shars tend to have inward curling eyelashes, Boxer males tend to have cancers if one or both testicles don't descend. Both breeds tend to have reproductive issues as well, and it's a very good idea to have him neutered sooner rather than later to prevent those trouble cropping up. Again, your vet will advise.

All three breeds tend to be of superior intellect and so need plenty of mental and physical exercise and lots of patience (these large breed dogs don't mature until around aged three and so will show puppy behaviours long after reaching full size and sexual maturity).

Otherwise they make outstanding family dogs - be sure you understand and meet their needs and breed traits, and you'll all have a wonderful life together!
