We are thinking about rescuing this beautiful boy. I am just a bit curious as to what he is. Quite obviously a Pit mix, possibly American Bulldog? Any input is appreciated.

I raised AKC Boxers and did breed rescue in the US 40+years, my cousin raised Staffies (American Staffordshire Terriers, the proper name for most 'pit' type dogs).
I'm seeing a lot of Boxer in the dog you're considering for adoption. The brindle coat is often found in Boxers (used to be rare but is more common now, as are white Boxer colourations); the way the dog is sitting is very common to Boxers as well, and the narrow paws also indicate Boxer rather than 'pit' or Staffie.
As for the rest of the mix, I'd lean more towards one of the bull breeds (but not Staffie), probably Bulldog - do an online image search to see photos of Boxer-Bulldog mix puppies and dogs, and you'll see why I'm saying this.
He looks loaded with personality and will probably be a great addition to your family as long as you have a good understanding of breed specific characteristics of these dogs - for example, Boxers don't fully mature until around aged three years so you should expect 'puppy behaviours' through then. The Internet, your vet, local library, and your Leisure Services can also help you with training, health care, etc.
Have your vet give him a look over before deciding on adoption, and be aware of any laws in your area that might claim he is one of the 'dangerous breeds' either banned outright or under some rather severe legislation regarding fencing, leash-lead-muzzle, insurance, etc.
