I adopted a dog from our local shelter, he was said to be a Great Dane, but I think he is a mix of Great Dane and something else. I asked the vet and she said she couldn't tell if he was a mixed breed or not.

He looks like an uncropped Great Dane to me. He's small if he's an adult dog but if he's only around 6 mos. old he will grow a lot and all the black hairs on his back & tail (guard hairs) will come out and be replaced with fawn hairs instead. This will happen when he "blows" his puppy coat.
Check out similar looking breeds on the AKC's website for other breeds that look like him i.e., Bull Mastif, Boxer, Labrador Retriver, Rhodesian Ridgeback, etc.

I see some German Shepherd characteristics along with the great dane - the dark v on his head, the way his front legs are shaped, the shape of his head, and the hair on his back. He looks like a sweetheart, no matter the breed or mix. Mixed breeds tend to be healthier anyway. Enjoy!
Black mouth Curr my dog is part and I see that a bit in your dog the main way to tell is if they have webbed feet and black mouths also they are a breed of a mix of lab and German Shepard so thats probably why you see traits of a german Shepard but to me your dog looks like a mutt mixed with many breeds or a few.
Great Dane and German Shepherd. Look inside at the roof of his mouth? It should be mostly black, because he's almost all Great Dane and towards the back it will most likely be a different color. It seems the roof of a full bred dog will be one solid color. Check any friend or family member who has a pure bred dog and than compare it to another dog that is a mix besides your own so you can see the difference.

Wow! He looks exactly like my dog but my dog is 125 lbs we think he's a Dane/ Shepard mix but like you we got him form the shelter and were not sure
