What color should I paint my flat panel kitchen cabinets? My home is 30+ years old. The cabinets are stained very dark brown. I am told that they are made of plywood. I was surprised at this, because they are very solid and nice looking, very well made.
My appliances are black. My countertops are black with some gray and tannish specks. My walls are sage green. I bought new stainless knobs to install after painting.
I don't really want stark white cabinets. I like the thought of black cabinets, but realize that I have enough black with the appliances and countertops. How would gray cabinets look?

Since sage green is my favorite color I'm voting for a very light shade of the same color you have on the walls. Maybe an antique look? Certainly light! (03/01/2010)

I would suggest you take a good look at your kitchen, do you feel you want another color in it or would it feel too busy by adding the gray to the cupboards? Maybe the sage green in just a shade lighter or darker would be something to consider. Personally, I like the gray idea without seeing your kitchen but I too am a green freak. (03/02/2010)

I agree with Glenn's Mom. However, cream is nice with sage and black. You can go to any large paint store now and put in the colors of your walls or cabinets, furniture and what not, then try other colors in the photo with a touch of a button or mouse. Before you go with a color you don't like, I would take the time to do just that. Good luck! (03/02/2010)
This sounds just like our kitchen! We did cream cabinets with silver satin handles. Don't forget to consider your flooring! (03/02/2010)

You don't say if they are poly coated or varnished. www.prattandlambert.com has the products we had to use on our 100 year old house. Strip, sand, prime and paint. Lots of work ahead if you want durability from your products and work. (03/02/2010)
