She's 35 lbs. and 12 years old. Her adoption papers only say "shepherd mix" but don't specify what kind of shepherd or what she might be mixed with. The apartment complex I'm applying to says they won't take German Shepherds or other agressive breeds.

Unfortunately as far as your apartment search is concerned, you do have a German Shepherd mix. However, you may be able to talk to the landlord directly and point out that, at 12 years old, your senior dog is not likely to be a danger.
I've been there-gone through that and like Abigail says, she IS a GS in the eyes of your potential landlord. You very likely are not going to get that apartment because no matter how senior your dog, complexes with 'dangerous dog' rules will NOT bend.
I raised AKC Boxers in the US. After a divorce and selling of the family home I tried for months to find a place in AL and NW GA that would take me and my last Boxer - a then 11 year old neutered male with impeccable papers and police testaments to his outstanding social manners. I finally ended up buying a small trailer on a private lot to have a home for the two of us because I couldn't get ANY landlord able to waive the rules.
Most complexes are corporate owned and operated - they WILL NOT bend those rules so as to keep their liability insurance premiums as low as possible.
My adult children and their families still live in the US and they tell me nothing has changed since I left the US for the UK in 2010 - in fact, dangerous dog legislation has only increased in the last five years.
Sorry, wish I could have said something more cheery but the plain fact is you're not going to find any complex willing to bend or break the rules regarding 'dangerous dogs'. Best of luck - you'll have a worrying time but eventually you will find a home for you and your dog, hang in there!
