What is this item? It's made of wood. What is it used for and what might it be worth?

I FOUND IT. Thanks to all of you I kept searching with many of your ideas. It's an African Birthing Chair. Google it. Missing the seat piece that slides in the rectangle. Who knew! Thanks again all
Thanks for posting back.
Someone put a lot of work into this piece.
Glad you were able to find this information.
That's really cool! Neat that you have such a thing!
Also called Hand Carved Palaver Chair
So happy you figured it out! My first thought was chair back, but without seeing the entire piece I was not sure.
You could easily sell this as a decorative piece...just be sure to focus on that it is wood and the animals that are on it.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing and posting back with the update!
One of my mother's expressions was "What a palaver!"
I wonder if there is a connection?
Marg from England.
My best advice is to either take the item itself OR some really good photos from all angles, to a museum that is knowledgeable about African and Asian art, or send the photos to a museum. There are several possibilities that I can think of: the back of a chair, part of an elephant saddle.
It looks to be a decorative hand shield, this piece can be bought at a lot of decorative home stores. Without info of it's history, it would be hard to place it's whereabouts.
Can you show the back and tell me if it is curved or flat? Are there places for screws in the back--either at the top or on each of those things at the bottom?
How tall is it? How wide?
Perhaps with more info, I can offer more info! Thanks for sharing!
will do. Definitely curved. Keep you posted. Thank you.
Interesting..
I believe you could probably get some feedback on your item if you post several pictures and state measurements on several of these sites. I use these sites for getting information about 'odd' things and usually someone will respond that knows what it is.
