This plant looks to be in the Bonsai family. I cannot recall the exact name, I did see it at Home Depot before.

Hello! Bonsaï is not a family of plants nor a species of plants, originally it was a tradition of the Buddhists monks. When they saw a young tree in the wild that had no chance to survive, because it was too badly located to keep on growing, they would uproot the little tree and bring it back to their monastery to grow it in a container, (word Bonsaï means "plant in a container") The tree's branches and roots are pruned and shaped for years to dwarf the tree so that it can live and fit in a container, so originally it was a technic to offer a tree a life in a container as an alternative to its unevitable death if left in the wild.

It then became an art and a passion. Today many bonsaï which are sold are in fact genetically dwarfed or are false bonsai made from an already grown-up tree which trunk is cut short but with the traditional technics you can dwarf nearly any tree or bush and you can have an apple tree or a pine tree bonsaï or a grape wine bonsaï, it is just that it takes years to make a bonsaï and people prefer to buy them in a shop even if they are not real bonsaï. Here you can see the collection of Bonsaï of the Japanese emperor, one of them is more than 5 centuries old. Enjoy! www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_SI6lPlYj4

I tend to agree with Catherine as a Balfour scutellaria but we may know it better as Balfour Aralia or Dinner Plate Aralia.
