My aunt gave me a lovely piece of this house plant to grow as my own. Her's is huge and she's had it for years, but neither of us know what it is. Can you identify and would you be able to tell me how to start growing my own with this piece?

The plant is a Purple Queen, better known as the Wandering Jew.
I agree it is the Wandering Jew also called Purple Hart. Its latin name is Tradescantia pallida member of the very large Tradescantia family. It is a mexican plant and it is easy to grow. its flowers are pink it does not like cold water and when watering the water should not touch the hairy leaves. It is better to keep it out of reach of cats and dogs as it is toxic and can cause allergy.
