I recently got this plant from Craigslist, and the man who sold it to me didn't know what kind of plant it was. Over the past few weeks, it's gone from healthy and beautiful to kind of sickly. It looks like a common houseplant, but I don't know what it is. Can anyone help me so I can treat it right?

looks like a diffenbachia to me-highly poisonus to cats!
this is actually a rubber plant. It is native to Southeast Asia. Hence it is a rather tropical plant. I recognize it because we had them growing up.
For care definitely do NOT overwater. Having water stagnating in the pot will make it sickly. It does need to be kept moist in the summer but in the winter it needs very little watering.
your plant is showing signs of overwatering.
Also, the bigger the container you put it in, the more it will grow. A rubber plant can very quickly overtake a room, whcih is good and bad.
you want well-draining soil, so add peat or coarse sand if it looks too dense.
it loves a bright situation but it does badly with direct sunlight.
