What type of house plant is this? Also the leaves keep browning on the ends.

It looks like a schefflera to me.
If it is brown on the ends you are overwatering it.
it looks more like a corn plant (IE draecena fragans ) to me. I know because my mum had one just like it.
this plant is supposedly easy to care for, though it prefers indirect sunlight and warmish temperature. The soil MUST drain well, because any amount of sogginess or standing water will, as stated earlier, cause the plant to go brown. THey also require a lot less watering in the winter.

Photo is very dark so it does not really show up well enough to identify except maybe to the family plant.
I also believe this to be in the draecena fragans family. The most popular of these plants have variegated leaves so it may be difficult to find a good photo with plain dark green leaves.
As for the brown tips over watering may be the problem but fluoride in the water will also cause this to happen.
If you pull the dead leaves off the stem, do they grow back?
Here are a couple of sites that have descriptions and care instructions for a variety of corn plants (dracaena fragrans) that you might like to check out also.
