I would be very grateful if someone could advise what this houseplant is called? In the past 24 hours it seems to have developed black spot and I'm looking for treatment options (or whether to, unfortunately, throw it to the bin). Many thanks in advance for any help.

Perhaps a Kalanchoe luciae
This is a jade plant. You probably have over watered it. Make sure it is in a pot with plenty of drainage. You also may want to apply a fungicide to it.
i believe you have a succulent kalanchoe plant commonly (around here - Florida) called a flapjacks or paddle leaf kalanchoe.
Usually these are very easy to care for and your black (brown) spots could be caused by a couple of things and both are usually easy to take care of.
Here is a photo of a flapjacks/paddle leaf kalanchoe:

Huge thanks for your responses, folks! Looks like I have me a Kalanchoe. :o)
Usually only water it once a week but shall let the soil dry out and keep an eye on it; watering only when necessary.
Where I am, in the Canary Islands, the weather is usually 20°C+ and quite dry so don't think humidity played a part.
Thanks once again!
