We found this sweet thing in our house. We live in a heavily wooded area with lots of sandstone in southern Indiana. Can you tell me what kind of snake this is?

From what information that I can gather and from my use of a dichotomas key on identifying snakes in southern IN I have came up with the following answer, I feel that your little friend is a Eastern milk snake. They are non venomous and relatively harmless, although they have adapted the fighting characteristics of either a copperhead or rattler but it's fight is harmless. It is very commonly thought to be a copperhead because of the similarity in looks. I couldn't see his belly real well in the pic but if it was a black and white checkered sorta then it's certain an eastern milk. They live everywhere in the southern part of IN and throughout the state actually one of most common snakes of North America. They love mice, wooded areas, and sandstone. I hope I helped you some .
