You didn't say where you live, but it could be a Northern brown snake.

It looks similar to the West Virginia common watersnake but even the same species can have different markings/colors.
Here is a quote from the state web site.

The Common Watersnake is probably the most defensive snake in
the state and is popularly referred to as the water moccasin, not to be confused with the Eastern Cottonmouth a venomous species found to our south. There are no confirmed records of the cottonmouth or any venomous water snakes occurring within West Virginia.
