What kind of spider is this? I found it in the basement.

It's difficult to tell much from the photo but it looks like a common house spider. 1' length, 2' leg span, & 8 legs. Gray-brown to dark brown with two dark stripes on the head and thorax. Usually found in quiet undisturbed areas of gardens, backyards, sheds, homes, attics, and any other man-made structure. Builds cobwebs that are made up of crisscrossed strands of sticky silk. The most common spider in North America and can live up to seven years. If webs do not yield prey, the webs are abandoned and a new site is chosen.
You can send a picture of this to your local cooperative extension if no one here can identify it.
Difficult to tell from picture, but appears to be a common house spider.
However, I would suggest you take picture to your local Ace or True Value Hardware store and let them help you.
Perhaps this is a Woodlouse spider
Female specimens are 15-30 mm long, while males are 10-15 mm. They have six eyes, a dark-red cephalothorax and legs, and a shiny (sometimes very shiny) yellow-brown abdomen.
Woodlouse spiders are usually to be found under logs in warm places, often close to woodlice. They have been found in houses.
Woodlouse spiders hunt at night without the use of a web. www.stcnature.org/
