Check the site below, and scroll down 2/3 to 3/4 of the page to the Rove Beetle, also called the Devil's Coach Horse. I think that's what you pictured. It would be easier to help if there was a photo of side view also. If the Rove Beetle is not right, you might find what you're looking to identify, if you Google "large black ant-like bug".

This is not a large ant. It is a rove beetle, sometimes called the Devil's coach horse (Staphylinus olens). These large, ground-dwelling beetles belong to the family Staphylinidae and are occasionally found in urbanized areas of coastal southern California during September and October. This beetle has short wing covers (elytra) and does not fly.
Strange looking bug.
I do not think you have a bug that is in abundance but probably belongs to the beetle family.
It's possible it is a Rove Beetle and is not really harmful but very ugly and not very beneficial either.

If you're not satisfied that this is what you have then you can send your question and picture to your local extension agency and they can tell you what bug you have as they are very knowledgeable about insects in your area.

This insect is called Dermaptera- better known as Earwig. The Earwig is 1 of 2000 species. This insect can be a indoor or outdoor insect. This insect loves to hide in cracks, and are quite active in moist areas .
How big is it? It looks like a Palo Verde beetle, but they are like 6-7 inches. Can't gauge the size of yours.
