I need to know what kind of plant this is and how much sun does it need? I live in a basement suite where it doesn't get a lot of direct sun. Is there anyway to help the plant get some more light.

Umbrella plant (a.k.a. Schefflera). Doesn't need direct light; just bright indirect. www.gardeningknowhow.com/
The plant appears quite healthy and not at all etiolated. I suggest you continue caring for it as you have been. I burn daylight compact fluorescent lamps near many of my indoor plants. They cost little to operate and don't produce much heat.
Way to go Donna...I has going to say same thing. and likekinds, you R right on for caring for plant. I had one for twenty years.....
Dwarf Shefflera (there's also a variegated variety). Lighting is what others have said. Google Dwarf
Shefflera and see pictures.
