What is This Plant?

We have this vine growing beside our deck. It takes over and grows very rapidly. Does anyone know what it might be? Thanks for your help.

Donna, you'd do well trying to totally eradicate this plant, which of course is Virginia Creeper. Here in Fenwick, Ont (zone 6) it has become invasive & can be seen crawling 30'+ up tree trunks.

If not kept under very strict control it can rapidly take over a huge area.

This is Virginia creeper, which can be either a nuisance or something people love. Some garden centers actually sell it! Right next to your deck, I think it would be in the nuisance category, as it will take over rapidly and some people can be sensitive to the leaves and develop an itchy rash. On the other hand, if you have a large property and enjoy seeing wild birds, it would be great planted against a wall or old tree, as it develops berries in the fall that the birds just love and the leaves turn a beautiful flaming red before dropping in early winter.

Wear long sleeves and gloves if you are going to deal with it. And wash your hands and arms afterward. If it does make you itchy, it is a lot like poison ivy itch and lasts for days!
