What is the History of This Trunk?

An old wooden trunk.I found this trunk online originally posted for $15. The gentleman ended up giving it to me for free. I just love old trunks, I think they are absolutely beautiful and filled with character. I was just wondering if there was any value here as I had thought of redoing it. I didn't want to do anything to take away value if there was any here. Thank you so much for your interest and I really look forward to hearing what you have to say about this piece!

Does it have any markings on it? If it did, you could determine its age. I wouldnt do anything until I took it to a dealer

Before you do anything, I would take it to a local antique shop or someone who knows about these trunks. It may or may not be worthless.

I'd definitely check into it. Without any markings (they could be faded) there's not much any one can tell you here.

Your trunk has a very basic design without much embellishment. I found a trunk that is very similar but appears to be smaller. It has exactly the same paper and the original ribbon to pull the lid forward as your trunk: www.thejamesmadisonmuseum.net/.../it-is-a-trunk-not-a-chest

So, you have Mid 19th Century (1850s) Flat Top Antique Wooden Trunk.
The price of this fully restored trunk can go up to $500 www.thepirateslair.com/660-civil-war-era-restored-antique...

It seems there are no markings on the trunk or the locks so you would have to place the value the same as a vintage (after 1920) unbranded trunk.

Seeing the condition of the overall trunk (including inside) I would say that most any improvement you made would add value.
There are hundreds of 'old' no name trunks listed for sale with asking prices running anywhere from $25 to $2,000 but not that many are selling in the higher end.
Several factors affect value:
Brand
Age
Condition
Style
Area where trunk is located.
The area is important because it is costly to freight ship something this size and not many people will pay that cost.
This means your trunk would probably be listed as 'local pick up only'. How do old trunks sell in your area? Was the $15 asking price about normal for this trunk in your area? Have you noticed other trunks selling in your area?

I would suggest you try asking about your trunk on one of the trunk forums:
