How do I get my hands on some "Government Cheese"? Thirty years ago, I tasted some government cheese and loved it. It was a rich, yellow cheese with more protein per ounce than most public cheese. How do I get some?

I had the free cheese years ago, too! I have been buying "Fields" brand pre-sliced cheese in the 5 pound blocks. They also have it unsliced. I buy the sliced block and it lasts for a month at our house. It is the best and the closest to the govt. kind. They also sell it in 2.5 lb blocks. I get it at IGA, and use to get it at Sav a Lot. Good Luck!
I was told that Land O Lakes American cheese taste like the govt cheese. I tried it, it was pretty darn close.

GOVERNMENT CHEESE...I THINK I'VE FOUND IT. My name is Mark and I'm not a "nut." I'm a gainfully employed Physician Assistant. I was raised in West Virginia in the 1960s and my family and neighbors were very poor and I remember going to the food bank many times with my mom to pick up that great cheese, butter and powdered milk.. ect. I am a self-proclaimed expert on this subject and have searched high and low for something similar. With all due respect Land O lakes aint even close. It is the same flavorless whimpy smooth american cheese everyone else sells. However, in WV there is a grocery store chain called Save-A-Lot. For those of the 50s and 60s generation, Save-A-Lot took over a lot of the old closed down A&Ps. By the way when Save-a-lot first started, their products were frankly awful but in the last 5-8 years have really improved especially there meat dept. I'm not poor anymore but still do most of my grocery shopping there and at another great discount grocery chain called ALDIs. Both are all over eastern mid atlantic and midwest states and most I've seen carry the same products.
Drum Roll Please............
Save-A-Lot have a store brand called "Coburn Farms Sharp American" in 5lb bricks for $14.99 that come in a red white and blue box. THIS IS IT!!!! or at least so darn close I can't tell the difference....and as I mentioned I'm an expert. Alot of you have a faulty memory about this cheese. It was not whimpy smooth. It was somewhat drier than the American Cheese eveyone else sells..closer to Cheddar. Try it even if you don't fondly remember and seek out the beloved "Government Cheese." You won't be dissapointed. It has great flavor "POP" and great texture...not too dry like cheddar and not too smooth like american. Right in-between. I love it on hamburgers. mac and cheese.... well you get the gist. I actually called Save-a-Lot corporate and suggested to them that if it were legal they should change the name from "Sharp American" to "Government Cheese." They got a chuckle but still seemed to take my suggestion seriously especially when I mentioned all the posts on the internet on this subject. Anyway they did not treat me like a nut so who knows.
I also got some gov. cheese many years ago and not the closest I can find is Land o lakes yellow American cheese. It is just as creamy as gov. cheese. We love it.
I remember it having a gritty texture
like cheddar cheese
No that's a lie Land O Lakes cheese is too salty if you want to have high blood pressure toilet.
The real deal government cheese??? Ive tried several others but it still doesn't touch the "Government Cheese".
Here's the IGA page for Cleveland, OH. Hopefully one is close to your location.

I use to work for the schools this cheese was a combination of American and cheddar ,that is why it taste so good.
Walmart in Indiana Pennsylvania has it
Ideal market has it in homer city Pennsylvania but not as salty tasting
Bilo also has it
Land o lakes actually makes the Fields brand cheese. So if Fields is cheaper, buy it.
I'm interested in buying boneyard American cheese.

Where I get this cheese in Dallas tx or Arlington tx
I like the yellow cheese but it's so hard to find. My mom and I use to go to the Army place on Michigan and Best streets when I was a kid.
That land o lakes extra melt does not taste like government cheese I ate in the 80s I bought it on instacart for 25 + dollars its missing the cheddar flavor!!!
They don't sell government surplus cheese or any food items. It used to be given out with other surplus food items, to low income people schools to use in their hot lunch programs, and probably homeless shelters and places that serve meals to the needy.
It wasn't anything close to American cheese. The government Cheese was 100 times better than America Cheese.
Yes that was the best cheese I ever had... I would be glad to purchase now since I am able
You CAN buy the cheese! It is made by Land O' Lakes and is called easy melt american cheese. It's for sale on Amazon, but it comes in big long blocks like the old days. 5 pounds in a block and you have to buy 5. It's like $112 for it all. If you went together with a few other people it would be good.
Sorry to tell you it was American cheddar cheese
It was made with American, cheddar, Colby and cheese curds. It is nowhere near American cheese.
The cheese today is not the same cheese they gave us back then
The government cheese was actually made by Kraft, NOT Land o'Lakes. Kraft owns the patent. They sell it as.... Velveeta. Boom.
I don't think it is given out anymore but I have to agree, it was really good cheese.
A good mild chedder cheese might taste the same.
The free government cheese is still available to low income seniors and children who aren't involved in the WIC program. To find out if you qualify for the food commodity program, contact your local Community Action Agency.
It was Kraft processed cheddar cheese
Bongards American Cheese, Tony's Finer foods in Chicago sells it in their Deli.
The best American cheese I ever tasted.
When I went to Tony finer food store, they told me they don't sell that cheese anymore. I was really sad.
Where can I buy government cheese?
I remember when i was a teenager my stepmom and would make pimento cheese out of it. And now i can't find it anymore.
I heard that you can't get it now unless you are 65 or older. I wish you good luck. I loved it too
Is there any way possible for me to get some government cheese??????
I Think The Great Value Brand 5 Pound Block At Walmart Pre-Sliced 160 Slices Is Great For $13!!!
