Your site says Craigslist charges no fees to sell items. But, I just tried listing a hi-fi component (asking price $800) on the Los Angeles CL and got to the end, only to be asked for my credit card # for a fee of $3.00. What's going on here? I had written out the ad, loaded pictures and tried to post, only to come to a demand for a $3.00 fee. This has never happened before. I refuse to pay the fee, so my ad is now stuck in limbo as an unpublished draft. I have another ad running there now for a more expensive item than $800 and wasn't hit up with a fee for that. What gives?

A lot of it is due to the overwhelming amount of spam they've been getting, making it almost painful to use. Here is the list of fees. There are ways to get around it if you post in different areas but are clear on what your intent is.. just try not to be deceiving:
This could be because you already have one listing on there for a large sum of money and now you want to list another. You'll need to read the FAQ and posting rules for the area you want to list your item/items. They are changing now because of the problems they have. This will depend on different factors why they are charging a few to post some items and other items are free.
The $3 fee may seem reasonable to you, but my point is, why has CL suddenly started to charge in a way they had never done before? Has their policy(s) changed? I have had another hi-fi component ad running for $1195, that I just now renewed, and no fee was applied to that renewed ad. There's no reason that my new ad for another hi-fi item at $800, should be charged with a fee to post. It's seemingly arbitrary and nonsensical. --BTW, I am not a dealer of any kind.
You seem to have a legitimate complaint but the best solution would be for you to go to your local site and make a complaint/inquiry.
Here is the way to do it.
It depends on what city you are in and what you are selling. Craigslist charges $75 to post a job ad in Los Angeles. That is probably why you are being charged.
Yes, but the $75 fee applies to job listings. I'm just posting an item for sale. Never been hit up for a posting fee until now.
Craigslist has made several changes in the past several months and each state has its own fee structure. They are also charging different for some cities but most of the fees are for job listings and business listings.
Everyone will have to check their personal zip code for new Craigslist fees but most of the US (not Canada) can still list personal items for free.
I meant to add that Craigslist is starting to keep track of how many postings a year an individual makes and after a certain number (?) they will designate that person as a dealer and charge fees for listings.
That is very good comment you shared.Thank you so much that for you shared those things with us. I'm wishing you to carry on with your achievements. All the best.
Did you post your item for sale by dealer or owner? Make sure it's "by owner"? And hopefully you won't have a charge due?
*That is if you are not a dealer of course*
