I wipe down the inside rubber gasket of my washer thoroughly dry immediately after each use with a cotton towel to prevent mold, mildew, and smells. If you do not, bacteria and mold will grow.

I have a top loading washer. As long as I leave the washer lid open, it dries out in a few minutes. My washer is 14 years old.
Top load washer will not have any problems with mold. Just the new advanced washers with this front load washer.
I never thought of that. Guess I'll add that to my "to do" list!
Yes! I had a friend whose washer became moldy because she did not clean her gasket afterwards.
Good tip. I can see how the mold would build up, especially if you're prone to closing the door immediately after removing the clothes.
Yes, I also slightly leave the door open to allow it to throughly dry as well.
I have a front-loading machine that I clean with several methods, depending, on time and energy. I use white vinegar in the fabric softener cup and run it through a rinse and spin cycle. I, too, wipe the rubber door gasket, sometimes with a rag, sometimes with a used dryer sheet. I keep a used toothbrush handy to 'brush' the crevice in the gasket and 'fish out' extra lint and hair. I also wipe down the 'window' in the door, inside and out.
