I'm looking for inexpensive ideas for table decorations for a high school homecoming dance. The theme is based around the Wizard of Oz movie with the cafeteria focusing on the Emerald City.

Maybe at a craft store or even Wal-mart you could find some inexpensive green plastic fake gemstones and sprinkle them on the tables. You could create a yellow brick road easily out of some yellow bulletin board paper-- maybe ask a teacher at school to hook you up with some of that. Maybe you could spray paint plastic horse figurines to be like the horse of a different color. A hot air baloon make of paper hanging up somewhere would be neat, too. (09/04/2006)

If you can't find any cheap green table-covers (like the plastic ones found at dollar stores) try to find those gold foil scatter stars in an emerald/green colour. For centrepieces you could use helium filled green balloons tied up with gold curling ribbon and have the ribbon at different lengths to give a tall-staggered-fuller effect. You could weigh them down with cheap terracotta pots, sprayed with gold paint and glue on some cheap gemstones or beads. You can get great beaded string garlands for xmas trees and you could use green or gold ones (or both)...even gluing those around the pots. If I think of anything else I'll add it soon. (09/04/2006)

Following up to my previous post, you could coat the terracotta pots (used as balloon weights) with red glitter, a bit like Dorothy's shoes, instead of painting them gold and adhering fake gemstones. Otherwise you could have a mix of both! (09/04/2006)

What about $1 watches for Tin Man's heart, rolled papers tied with ribbon for Scarecrow's diploma (brain) and toy medals for Lion's courage? Also, I saw a Tin Man made from household tin cans and scarecrows and wicked witches are easy to come by this time of year. What about little signs that say "No one gets to see the wizard!"
Hope these ideas help.

I'd go to the dollar store and look for those plastic high heeled shoes that are used for favors. Use spray adhesive and cover with red glitter. Any Wizard of Oz theme party has to have ruby slippers. A few yellow rectangles adhered to the tablecloths to mimic the yellow brick road, sprinkled with gems (as mentioned above) and put the ruby slippers on top will give each table its theme. Sounds like a fun party. Good luck. (09/12/2006)
