Hi. I have one pair of zebra finches, but every time the female lays an egg on the ground and it breaks. They also have a nest, but she didn't go inside. What do I do?

It sounds like your finches are young and possibly inexperienced in the parenting department. Here's a few suggestions I have based on my experience raising finches. Be sure the nest is located in a private area of the cage. You may want to cover a corner of the cage to assure privacy. Sometimes, I've put more than one nest in the cage and the birds choose their favorite and lay eggs there. It's also important that they have a good supply of nesting material. Can you put some kind of soft padding on the area she lays the egg?
You could try protecting the area, but also let the Finch's take care of there own. Sometimes eggs are not good, therefore they are so smart to get rid of any bad ones so that it leaves room for healthier ones for hatching. This happens more than you think .
Maybe she doesn't like where you have put the nest? You might just put the nest where she is trying to lay already, and maybe wear gloves when you interact with the nest
I don't know if finches do this, but some animals do not like to lay where they smell other animals/possible predators (IE people)
