The machine needs a good cleaning and some oil added to the machine. You will need to remove the casing and add some oil to the buttons and arms of the machine. it sounds like the machine is rusted in some places which is preventing it from moving freely.

Safety first: unplug the machine before doing anything else.

It may be best to be sure you have the correct oil before you get started because it will probably need oil in several places. Techs recommend using only Tri-Flow or Singer grease for gears and sewing machine oil for oiling. You can check out other types but never never use 3-in-1 Oil or WD-40 (so say most repair techs).

You can usually find what you need at Michael's or Jo Ann's and may even find information on a reliable service person. Professional cleanings are usually expensive no matter who or where.
You should try doing this yourself as you have a nice vintage machine but these do need occasional cleanings and oiling.

Usually when you have a problem like this your machine is due a complete cleaning. If you have never ventured into this area of caring for a machine you can find several videos on Google YouTube that will help you with what and how to do it. You will not find one with your exact machine but maybe just watching the video of cleaning any model/brand will help you as so many machines are very similar when it comes to what needs cleaning and oiling.
New Home is Janome so any older machine with that name may be close also.

Instructions from tech:
"Crack her open, shift it to the widest zig zag then watch it work as you turn the hand wheel see where the cam connects to make the zig zag.

then move it to straight stitch. usually you can see the mechanism move. if you don't see movement then it probably is some old sticky oil."
This may not sound exactly like your machine but you can get the general idea. Also, it may take several oiling sessions - maybe an hour or so apart - for your machine to get rid of all the old oil and be using only new oil.
Be sure to clean all the debris away from any and everything you can see. You may need q-tips and tweezers to get everything but once you turn it over and start looking you will know more about what everyone tells you.

If you get stuck and need help here is a link to a very good sewing forum (you will have to join) and they help everyone.

Aside from a good cleaning and oil, due to its age, unless you are a pro repairperson, you may have to take it to the repairperson.
