I bought a Zojirushi bread machine at a thrift store. I've always wanted to try one of these, but new ones are so expensive. I'm very disappointed that when I plug it in it doesn't even light up and the buttons do nothing. Do these things have breakers or fuses that can be replaced?

Mine has a timer wheel. You have to switch it to OFF in order for it to work, or else it will assume you want to wait for it to be functional. I hope that makes sense (and that you see that on your model, as well). If nothing works, take it to the thrift shop for an in-store exchange. Good luck!
Try plugging it in to another socket. If it still doesn't work, the machine needs to be fixed. I would take it back to the thrift store.
Try calling the manufacturer and asking. Don't tell them it was purchased in a thrift store, just inquire as to what to do to troubleshoot the problem.
If they aren't of assistance and you are at all handy, maybe this video could help you before you return it:
