If you have quite a few separate dishes of food to heat up in the microwave, when you first take out your first dish, put your dinner plate on top of the hot container. By the time everything is hot and ready to eat, you'll also have a nice warm plate for your food.

This page contains the following solutions.
Place a wet paper towel over container when heating something in the microwave. Voila, no more splatters.
When I warm food in the microwave, I put it in a bowl and cover it with a saucer. This keeps the oven clean. I can get more in the oven by stacking the bowls.
Keep leftovers moist while heating in the microwave. Take one paper towel. Wad it up and run it under the faucet. Squeeze the excess water out. Unfold and cover food.
Keeping a microwave oven clean will ensure accurate timed heating. Also, a small glass of water set in corner of microwave will help food from becoming too dry.
