Use bubble wrap for storing small breakable items. Cut the mailer into wide strips. Place the strips in between items as you place them in the storage box. This protects anything breakable.

Put paper plates between nice fine china plates when stacking them to prevent chipping and scratches.

My family used to run a restaurant/bar and we got TONS of beer boxes. By using the boxes with the dividers inside (used to keep the glass bottles from breaking) to store Christmas ornaments we had a thrifty yet extremely practical way to protect glass ornaments and other breakables!
