After an unusually cold winter here in South Africa, it is a blessing to start seeing signs that the seasons are changing. Our apricot tree is sporting its first few small blossoms, and the days are slowly getting warmer. This morning I noticed these finch nests hanging from a tree in our neighbor's garden.

Tennessee BunnyWhile strolling through the property at my father's vacation home, I came across this beautiful wild rabbit just sitting in the green grass having a snack. I zoomed in on him and discovered how beautiful he really is, healthy and alert.

Crazy Pepper PlantI created a bank where my front lawn meets the street. It's covered in Bermuda. I am rooting a variegated ivy for this bank. As the pieces root, I sprig them here and there. I hope by next year, the bank will be completely covered in ivy, because I have to clip the Bermuda by hand.

Sunflower at night next to lamppost
Sunflower LamppostThis has been a strange and wonderful year for plants on our property. This lovely sunflower bloomed at our lamp post then continued to grow into this grand specimen that greets us at our back door every day. It was even more beautiful in the evening with the light highlighting it!

Wild Pink LiliesThis is a wild lily that popped up out of nowhere. It hasn't been there in previous years, and we have nothing similar in color on our property. I have seen other wild lilies here in Oklahoma that are orange with brown spots and seem to have the same shape.

Bellflower Bloom (Campanula...This tiny flower, smaller than a dime, is the one to carry that huge, tongue twister of a name, 'Campanula portenschlagiana'. It couldn't be any prettier if it were called something simple, such as 'Bellflower', which it is. Ain't life sweet?

Eastern Box TurtleThe Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina), is native to the eastern half of the United States. Both the shell, called a carapace, and the skin are brown with orange and yellow spots and splotches to help camouflage it in the leaf litter where it can often be found.

Doe and FawnsThe doe raised her fawns in our grove next to the house and garden. We saw them all summer. We live next to a gravel road and they are standing on our front lawn about 150 feet from our house. They also helped themselves to some garden produce. They are beautiful animals.

The Strong GrasshopperI heard my friend's cat hissing in the garden at something. When I looked down and saw this one-legged grasshopper, I wasn't sure whether it had just lost its limb in the cat battle or if it had already lost it previously. I moved him somewhere he couldn't be bothered.

Photos of My GardenI inherited the love of flowers and gardening from my dad. After years of planting impatiens I was hit with the impatien wilt. I read about the new Bounce impatiens which were a hybrid created to replace the impatiens destroyed by the wilt. This is the 2nd year and they are fabulous.

Beautiful Laurel FallsThis waterfall is a very popular reason that our area (Tennessee) is blessed with so many hikers each year. They usually love to go see the Laurel Falls. No matter what season, this waterfall is absolutely stunning! The hike there is a bit of a challenge, but so worth it.

Butterfly with Autumn ColorsThis little beauty landed on the railing of a walkway in a local forest area. This was taken in the beginning of November in Nebraska. That year it got to 80 something degrees that day. Most of the leaves were already gone from the trees, but this little guy gave us some fall colors.

Giant Silk Moth (Polyphemus)As I was making beer munchies in my kitchen, I heard a light thumping on the window. I opened the curtain and saw this gorgeous, huge freaking moth. I looked him (her, actually, I think) up and discovered she was part of the giant silkmoth family called Polyphemus, after the Greek cyclops.
