Here in Oklahoma, it seemed to switch from summer to fall practically over night. One day the heat seemed oppressive, while the next evening we needed long-sleeved shirts and warmer socks! Today this grasshopper landed right in front of me, with all of his orange and yellow finery.

Hike to Grotto FallsWe are so fortunate to live in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park! One of our favorite hikes is to Grotto Falls which is high above Gatlinburg. On the way, we hike along the stream and see plenty of smaller waterfalls and sometimes a bear.

A Carpet Of Colchicum (Meadow Saffron)I mentioned in another post how fall tends to play havoc with my mood. Here is another flower that helps lift my low spirits caused by the onset of autumn. The flower is Colchicum. It has several common names, the most popular being autumn crocus. I think that name is appropriate. It does resemble a crocus very much.

Misty Morning Bike RideThe morning after a rare desert rain brought lovely cool air with receding mist. Clouds brushed the mountain ranges just as the sun's pale, golden light started to warm away the chill and sweeten the air. My long ride up a mountain hill was well worth this view!

Late Harvest TomatoesThese tomatoes are growing like gangbusters, but early in the season the vines were weak looking and the tomatoes gnarly. I took them in because the nights are getting cold and because I noticed the skins were showing cracks. They look pretty with my aloe vera by the window.

Pretty Peacock Showing OffWe are currently having wonderful spring weather, which is truly a blessing after an unusually cold winter. I went for coffee in the outdoors at a plant nursery, and came across this peacock just as he was putting up a great display of elegance and color. I just love peacocks! Definitely one of my favorite birds!

Angry Mother NatureIt's amazing how a thunderstorm can take down a huge tree by the roots. This one was in the middle of the neighborhood and no other trees fell. Thankfully the house only received minor damage.

Creature On Caracalla BloomI don't know what this creature is. Maybe a butterfly? Maybe a moth? In my infinite wisdom, I, in another post, accused this little creature of not knowing what it was doing. It and its kin were feverishly searching the caracalla blooms for nectar, apparently not finding any.

Peacock in New JerseyThis beautiful peacock was wandering around the grounds quietly wowing the people who came upon him. His colors were spectacular and the only thing that would have made this more perfect would have been if he fanned out his gorgeous tail feathers.
