Drying Apples

September 28, 2004

A pile of dried apple slices.I came into a bunch of Granny Smith Apples and I want to dry them in my oven. I am not sure how to do this and what temp to set the oven on and for how long. Any advice would be nice.

Usually when I am drying anything in the oven, if it is fruit or deer jerkey, I dry items for about 24-48 hours on the lowest setting my oven has. I have an electric oven so it is about 200 degrees. I place aluminum foil directly on the racks and then place what ever it is that i want to dry. About ever 8 hours i turn it over. Most stuff is done within 24 hours. I also have made fruit roleups this way just pouring the puree into an aluminum pan. Hope this helps

When I dry any thing in the oven it is put on the lowest setting, then I take an oven mitt fold it in half an put it between the door and the oven to let out the moisture.

Whether you are drying apples in an oven or in a dehydrator, is it necessary to put lemon juice on the fruit to prevent the apples from browning from oxidation?

Yes, either lemon juice or sodium bisulfite. I use 1 tsp of sodium bisulfite to 1 quart water. I soak the apples in the solution for about 2 minutes. I run the soak process with two batches going. While one is soaking i am laying out another. I switch the oldest back to the front each time i empty a batch. I lay out my apples on a sheet from my excalibur dehydrator.

Then i sprinkle a sparse breeze of cinnamon sugar over the apple sheet and stick in the dehydrator. Takes about 10-12 hours. If you save them in a food saver, when they are dried, they will last quite awhile. My kids love them so much i have not had the opportunity to test how long 'awhile' is. I also do the very, very popular pineapple rings!

Dried apple slices make a delicious healthy snack. Rather that buy them at the market, if you have a dehydrator, they are easy to make at home. This is a page about drying apples in a dehydrator.
