You can buy hamster litter. Kaytee makes one called Potty Litter. You can also buy a litter box especially made for hamsters that fits in the corner of the cage. My 3 hamsters all use the litter box.

Wood shavings and similar items can cause respiratory problems. I cut shreds of strong paper towels like Bounty, and my hamsters love it because its light weight and they can snuggle in it!
