Perhaps adding the 10 inches to the bottom would be the simplest/easiest. After doing this, make a 4-5 inch curtain tie back with matching fabric. Would the area to the side of the door allow for this? Using the tie back would add light into the room as well...

Fabric Advent Calendar
Thrifty it is! I like this idea. The kids might even help while making the calendar by adding Christmas stickers to the pockets. Letting them use fabric markers to decorate might also be a fun way to let them make this their calendar.
