For those who have birds, a nontoxic way to clean is hydrogen peroxide at full strength. It works great!

I used diluted white vinegar and do light cleaning every day and their cages stay spotless. Well placed perches and food bowls make all the difference.
I forgot to mention that I have rather large cages and do allow my parakeets out during the day. I do spend a lot of time cleaning their food and water bowls. I give them and my other birds fresh food twice a day. I find the cage cleaning a five minute job, per cage every day.
