N.E.T. Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes, and Cures

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 107 Posts

N.E.T. (Not Enough Time) syndrome is the acronym I have given to those occasions when I feel like there simply isn't enough time in each day for me to do the things I either need to do or think I need to do. Do you have days like that? If so, here's my description and suggested cure for N.E.T. syndrome.

Symptoms:

  • A constant feeling of mental and physical overload.
  • The inability to focus on one task at a time.
  • Total exhaustion at the end of the day.

Cause:

Assuming too much responsibility at home, work, and socially.

Affects:

  • In trying to do too many things, each task may not be done as well as it could or should be.
  • A tendency to quickly and frequently lose patience with family, friends, co-workers and self.
  • No rest and relaxation time.

Cure:

Acquire and practice the skill of saying "No" in order to prevent daily overload. Establish and remain committed to priorities, making time for yourself a top priority and sticking with that plan. Accept the fact that due to circumstances beyond your control, sometimes things just do not go as planned. Some things have to be pushed to another time or possibly even remain undone.

I believe psychologists refer to this condition as "hurry up syndrome." Because people try to do more than one thing at a time and feel pressured to hurry up to get more done. Personally, I believe the human nervous system was intended to do one thing at a time and not multitask.

Business has become a type of status symbol. Its just as hollow as money as a status symbol!
