When repotting plants, or planting new seeds, place a coffee filter in the bottom of the pot before filling it with soil. The filter stops the soil from leaking out of the holes in the bottom of the pot, it also helps keep the soil moist.

The problem with paper is that it gets moldy when wet. So unless you remove the filter, it may eventually be hazardous to the plants. I prefer an old pair of nylon stockings. Or if you still want to use a coffee filter, use it on the outside, securing it with rubber bands.
I've done this with a paper towel and never had them get moldy. It also helps to keep slugs from hiding in that little hole at the bottom of the pot. Good idea Eileen
I would think the filter would rot or tear apart after awhile and the dirt would fall out the hole. Maybe not though, just wondering. I put rocks in small pots.
