That nice spiral caused by a vine that used to grow on the tree. There are quite a few of those where I live. The vines grow so fast you can almost see it. I've a couple examples of vine segments I cut from one tree. Maybe I'll send pix of them to ThriftyFun.
My husband found one like this, was the right size for a walking cane.
