Whatever you do decide to do, I warn you do NOT call any of the "invention" people that advertise on TV! (or on the Internet) They will basically just take your money & run & charge you anyway!They will rip you off like they did a friend of mine!
You will need to do a patent search. Look in the yellow pages under Attorneys & find a "patent attorney". Then call them and ask how much it costs & what they will do for you. Do your homework and call around so you don't get ripped off! ...
Most good attorneys will meet you for free the first time or will call you back when they are not busy & answer your questions.

Be very careful with whom you share details of your invention; there are nasty people out there who would take what sounds like a great idea and steal it for themselves. Whatever patent attorney you talk with, be sure they sign a waiver. Good luck!
The 'gov' links mentioned here are definitely the safest and you'll find all kinds of info of how long the patents are good for before they expire and need to be renewed.
