I have a set of 1961 encyclopedias from " The American Educator " and I'm wondering how much they are worth.

The place I always start with to try to find somethings resale value, is looking on ebay, it may not be very accurate, as some things never sell, but it is free, and usually fast. If not, you can probably search for that name and year, and in the list of sites, find someone that sells that very same thing, with a price they want for theirs.
Best of luck to you in valuing your books!
Nothing. Look at all that has happened and been invented since 1961. None of that is in your encyclopedias. Yet, all that is in your encyclopedias is in the new ones which are actually on CD and take up less space.
So many encyclopaedias of little worth were published over the years, but editions of the good ones can retain their value. I look with a jaundiced eye at reference books from the 1980s onwards, even more so those from the beginning of this (21st century) onwards.
Your missing a whole lot of really great information that has been put in the older rarer encyclopedia sets & "Do It Yourself Sets" from the 1930's, 40's, & 50's.
Some of the set's which I have contain so many different things that I have yet to locate any where on CD/DVD sets or on the net simply none of my older rarer encyclopedia sets & "Do It Yourself Sets" have yet to be scanned by anyone and saved in a format as such.
Their are for instance flags of tiny for gotten towns in countries you cannot find in those newer CD/DVD sets your talking about, not to even mention all of the pictures of every topic you can think of. When those newer CD/DVD sets are made they often skip many things all because someone some where thinks it's not of any importance.
So each time that happens we all are loosing information forever because people forget what they have never known or ever seen, ha so very easy.
I was not going to even mention this but so many of the newer DVD encyclopedia sets are nothing more than a half a$$ed attempt at a comic read. Since companies pull data from the net they are putting on these CD/DVD sets being sold all around the world.
The info. "and I'm sure must people that posted the info." being used from places such as Wikipedia just for one quick example so many of the times is flawed to the point it's nothing but a sad joke!
Not to even mention in the masses of people on the net where this info. is mostly being gathered for these CD/DVD encyclopedia sets you find many that just go around changing correct info. on sites to wrong info. so they can get their little jollies out of that.
To the people that think they know what ever it is they are posting about, "But sadly they are wrong or so wrong they have no clue that they are" because they have gotten all or part of that messed up info. they are spreading themselves.
Then because no one hardly checks anything any more this crazy cycle goes on and on. The outfits doing these newer CD/DVD sets are not checking the data they are stamping out on those CD/DVD sets.
The printed sets I have I'm sure has wrong info. also but so little compare to today's information it sure makes you wonder where this crap everyone thinks is correct on anything and everything will end one days not to mention the damage it is doing.
Especially on our younger generations. It like someone some where had the great idea our generations not needing to know how to read & write in cursive. I feel for every young man or woman each time they are ask to sign their names especially like when signing for your first car, house, when you apply for your wedding lic. and of coarse if your blessed with your first child on there birth certificate.
It's a disgrace someone did to our new generations when it was done. But that little bit left out again not passed being passed on and how to correctly read and do handwriting in cursive.
It's like forgotten languages we do not understand now.
I'm just giving this as a example of things getting left out and not passed down as in old rare encyclopedias and wrong info. being put in newer CD/DVD sets. Is all so scary when you step back and look at what is going on, it's like right now it is nearly to late.
This damage and missing info. we all used to have basic things is slipping away and is being forgotten even the simplest of things.
I did not mean to get off topic and do such poor writing either.
But much of what has happened since 1961 on CDs or DVDs is missing info. or is even incorrect if the data has been taken from all over the net which most all has been.
It sounds more like you are from a much younger newer generation that fears everything someone says to you. Like the word "Hoarder" you can still have things and not be considered a hoarder. Thats in away you made it appear saying "Yet, all that is in your encyclopedias is in the new ones which are actually on CD and take up less space. You are better off throwing them out and making more room in your home." Hum.
Everyone has a right to their own opinion whether anyone likes it or not. But that goes in both directions!
Take care enjoy your CDs/DVDs and I'll keep enjoying my rare book sets too.. ;-)
If the covers are attractive, you may find someone who wants to use them for a craft, such as decorated books or a lampstand. I don't think they have a value otherwise.
They are worth 00000000. Sorry to say and no one will take them. Goodwill does not want them either. If they are of value to you, keep them, otherwise recycle.
Um someone who understands history and some interesting facts now deemed too old too believe would.
Try contacting a "USED BOOK STORE", sometimes the nicer ones will still take them. That's better than "Recycling" them.
If the pages are glossy I'm not sure you can recycle them I had some rejected before is why I'm stating that.
Peace :-}
I am actually looking for some vintage encyclopedias in great shape. I like the Brown and Gold, Burgundy and Gold, and Black and Red (typically Collier) sets. I think the craftsmanship and overall looks are beautiful.
This same travesty that is happening with encyclopedias is happening with other lovely books like the older Reader's Digest Condensed books, the ones with the awesome patterned covers. Book Stores won't take them, and folks almost can't give them away.
Right now I make shelves out of these books, as well as hollow book stashes. I understand some of you may think that is horrible, and that I am destroying these books. In my mind, this is one of the only ways to save these books so people of this generation can still enjoy them in some way, rather than just throwing them away.

Encyclopedias are not in demand unless they are over 100 years old and complete. Yours is worth little to nothing at this time.
