They have to be sealed at least twice a year to keep from staining. Many food products will put a permant stain on the granite. A granite installer or a big box store could explain what the sealer is and how to apply.
I clean houses for a living and I would vote against granite countertops. They may look pretty and shiny and can be cleaned with windex or specific granite cleaners. The downfall for me is that because granite is a natural stone, it pits over time. Go to someones house that has had granite for over a year and rub your hand across them. You can feel all the tiny pits. Think of food preparation and all the food that must get smashed down in those pits every day.
Another issue I have is that the glue always shows where they have to glue the seams on countertops. With anything black and shiny of course it shows dust and collects dust like crazy. It costs way too much for what it is. And just for the record Corian countertops scratch very easy, like just sliding your coffeemaker across it. Laminates come in 100's of colors and designs and I would stick with what's best. Just my opinion!
