Brown onion and beef in shortening. Combine remaining ingredients and then add browned meat and onions. Simmer until seasoning is well blended.
This makes a lot! I usually have enough left to put in the freezer. This is best made in the crock pot as chili is one of those things that, the slower and longer it cooks, the better it tastes. I usually let simmer all day on low.
