Gold Post Medal for All Time! 846 Posts

Here's a super easy recipe equivalent chart for tomatoes:

  • 3 medium tomatoes = 1 lb.
  • 8 small plum tomatoes = 1 lb.
  • 25 to 30 cherry tomatoes = 1 lb.

  • 1 lb. fresh diced = 1 1/2 cups
  • 1 (16 oz.) can = 2 cups
  • 1 (28 oz.) can = 3 cups
  • 1 (35 oz.) can = 4 cups

As a real tomato lover this is a super tip to have. I've already made several copies to put in my favorite cookbooks. Thanks, Deeli!

Deeli, do you know the comparisons for how much actual tomato there is per can, vs the water, when comparing whole, diced, crushed, and stewed tomatoes? It seems to me that with a can of whole tomatoes there is a lot more water than with the others. Thanks!

Colleen, I didn't see an answer to your question from three years ago, about how to determine how much water is in various types of canned tomatoes. Its' something I've wondered about, too.

While I didn't find a brand by brand comparison, I came across a good article in about.com, about the differences in product in various forms of canned tomatoes:

Hope this helps, everyone.

Great chart Thanks. I've srarted using fresh tomatoes in my cooking to avoid the BPA from the canned tomatos.
